A great tale from the 60's. Sylvan Hart (Buckskin Bill) homesteaded Five Mile Bar on the Salmon river. My uncle Terry Ring met Buckskin Bill a few times during high school in Boise. Bill was good friends with his art teacher and would visit the class each year.
The author also mentions the famous Polly Bemis, the Chinese "poker bride" who lived 10 miles downstream and across from Shepp Ranch. I visited Shepp Ranch once when I was 16, haven't been back since. Charlie Shepp and Pete Klinkhammer owned the ranch for years while they mined for gold around the turn of the 20th century. Pete Klinkhammer's sister Mary McDonald was my great, great grandmother.
